vicarious (2025) is initiated by Ema Yuasa who organises nosmosis research since 2022 in Tokyo, Japan.
'nosmosis research' is a research project where for the past three years (2022-2024) they have endeavored to use dance as a communication tool in order to hold dialogues within diverse groups of people beyond backgrounds, social status, generations, genders, and sexualities. I joined them as a guest artist in 2023-2024 and through uncountable conversation with Ema, we found a desire to make a piece together.
Since last summer (2024), Ema, Yu Miyai, another collaborator who works as a documentary film maker and I have interviewed some workshop participants about their personal experiences in ‘separation’ and ‘grief’ which are the theme of this creation. The interviews have deepened our dialogues and all this process has finally transmuted into a performance.
“vicarious” , the title of this creation, means that some feelings or actions of others can be experienced in our imagination as if we had also been through them.
Those series of dialogues have eventually identified each one of us as someone who has ceaselessly been facing one’ s own separation experiences that totally differ from others. We will be very glad if your body, heart, and soul altogether can feel this creation. In the performance, the bodies interweave our day-to-day moments that we live through together with our separation experiences, embracing our sorrow, fury, affection, and struggles.
